Our Community

Our community is principally made up of Alamogordo, La Luz, and Tularosa.  Alamogordo is the epicenter of the Tularosa Basin, surrounded by the Organ, Sacramento and San Andres mountain ranges.  Being in the basin, Alamogordo weather is somewhat milder than elsewhere with the severe weather stopped for the most part by the mountain ranges.

The El Paso and Northwestern Railroad founded Zoo EntranceAlamogordo in 1898.  City founders ensured that parks were a part of the original plat of the city and parks are still found throughout Alamogordo today.  Alameda Park was the first, established in 1898 by the railroad. Alameda Zoo is the oldest zoo in the Southwest. The zoo contains about 300 animals of 90 different species.  The zoo has a playground area and shaded picnic tables.

At the opposite end of Alameda Park is the Toy Train Depot, where your kids will make a perfect excuse to take a train ride around the park. (They will let you on even if you don't have kids.) Inside the building (a 100-year old depot) there is a 1,000 square foot HO gage layout depicting Alamogordo in the 1940 and hundreds of model trains.

Washington Park has a covered picnic area, a skateboard park, a band shell, and tennis courts. Organ Park has tennis courts and Kids Kingdom; a playground designed by kids and made for those under 14.

Founders Park, located at the corner of US 54/70Railroad Town Founders and 10th Street, is the only park in town without a place for kids to play. It was started in 1998 during Alamogordo’s centennial celebration to honor some of the people and cultures involved in the establishment of the City.  In the park, you will find several bronze sculptures by local artists including one featuring the three cultures most responsible for today’s Alamogordo-Native American, Spanish Conquistador and American Cowboy.
